Year 5 Class 11

W/E 02/10/2026

Year 5 enjoyed a fascinating workshop led by storyteller and historian Matthew Bellwood, exploring leisure activities in Victorian Britain. Pupils discovered how Victorians spent their free time and compared this with entertainment in other periods of history. They learned about popular Victorian toys and pastimes and even had the opportunity to try some traditional parlour games. It was a fun and engaging way to bring history to life and deepen our understanding of the Victorian era.

Year 5 National Archives: Black Victorians

To kick off our work for Black History Month, Year 5 took part in an exciting workshop led by The National Archives, exploring the lives of Black people during the Victorian era. Using historical documents, pupils investigated the experiences of three Black individuals and developed their historical enquiry skills. The session explored themes of migration, identity and resilience, highlighting how many Black Victorians overcame racism to achieve success. We also learned about “hidden histories” and discussed the importance of remembering and celebrating people whose stories have often been overlooked.
