Climate Justice Art Exhibition

Children from Year 6 represented Beechwood brilliantly last week at the Leeds City Museum when they were part of an event organised by Global Learning Leeds. The Climate Justice Art Exhibition was set up to allow children to creatively demonstrate their ideas and views about climate justice. In Beechwood all children created their own climate based art work and this was shown at the event. Ten Year 6 children hosted our table and explained the importance of the climate curriculum to different visitors including one of our local councillors Katie Dye,  our MP Richard Burgon and one of our governors Rev. Anne Russell.  Everyone agreed with the messages of the ocean song  when it was played to the room. Aayan and Ruth spoke about climate justice in connection with Nigeria and India and Lucy ended the event perfectly with her own climate poem.

Long term shifts

In temperatures

Making permafrost melt

And land is shifting

The consequences are causing drought, wild fires and floods among other things

Everybody needs to make a change for climate change!

Week ending 05/06/2026

Class 13 had an exciting afternoon at Fives representing Beechwood in the LEPP Y6 Football tournament.  The children were split into 3 teams and faced some tough opposition from teams at Whitelaith, Seacroft Grange and Crossgates.  All the children played really well and represented our school with determination and resilience.  Each and every Beechwood pupil showed incredible sportsmanship throughout the tournament and we are very proud of them.

London Day 3

We had a brilliant breakfast and then impressed all the teachers with our excellent packing skills. We headed into London for one last time and went on a relaxing cruise across the River Thames before going on the London Eye. We are now on the coach home after a wonderful trip which we will remember forever. 

London Day 2

Day 2 was another brilliant day. In the morning we went to the British Museum and explored all the history we've learned about at Beechwood. The children loved looking at all the artefacts. Shortly after, we went to Buckingham Palace to wave at the king. We then had a walk around London looking at the famous statues on Trafalgar Square before walking past Downing Street. We visited the national portrait museum and were amazed by the incredible paintings around us. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at Maxwells before going to the theatre. The Lion King was just magical and an experience we will never forget. Bring on Day 3!

London Day 1

Year 6 have had a fabulous first day in London. After a very early start, we set off on our journey. We headed to the Science Museum when we arrived. We had some lunch before we explored the wonderland and enjoyed the interactive features it had. We also enjoyed the 'Who am I' and 'Space' exhibitions. 

Shortly after this, we went to the National History Museum and we're amazed by the life like Tyrannosaurus rex on display! 

After a very long day of exploring, we headed to Pizza Express and enjoyed a very tasty meal! 

The children have loved it and very much enjoyed themselves. We are excited for tomorrow! 

Mrs Haylings and Miss Taylor took children from both Y5/6 to compete in a Foot Tech football 3 v 3 tournament at Bishop Young Academy on Tuesday 9^th February.  The children played a number of competitive games against schools from across East and North Leeds.  Everyone enjoyed the morning and there were some incredible skills shown including perseverance and resilience.  At the end of the tournament a select few children were shown to be standout players (MVPs!) and Year 6's very own Summer H was chosen!  We are very proud of all the children who took part.

Week Ending 06/02/2026

Well done to these children. Another excellent week in year 6! 

We have been working hard on our bridges in DT. These are our final pieces. After learning about all the different types of bridges, we designed which bridge we wanted (based on our learning). We then got to work on building our structure, making sure our bridge was sturdy and secure. 

On Friday morning we were able to share the climate work we are doing in school with some very important visitors. Councillor John Tudor and Richard Burgon MP joined our whole school assembly and then met different groups of children to learn more about what we believe is important at Beechwood. The children discussed our curriculum brilliantly, listened carefully and asked very thoughtful questions. We learned that Richard Burgon already does a lot of work promoting climate education and we hope he will tell people about what we do at Beechwood. John Tudor inspired us with his own story about how he began picking up litter locally to make a difference in his own area. After this visit, we have lots of ideas about what we will do next in school.

Week Ending 23/01/2026

Well done to this weeks certificate superstars for their hard work and effort in our curriculum

Year 6 had a fabulous outdoor science lesson. We made mini rockets by creating carbon dioxide within a small container. The gas created pressure which forced the lid to come off and the container to shoot up! All children enjoyed the lesson and their write up was excellent too. Well done year 6 ! 

Week Ending 05/09/25

What a fantastic first week back year 6 have had. Their behaviour has been excellent and they have been acting as fantastic role models to the rest of the school. In maths we have enjoyed exploring place value to a million. We have used place value counters to help us do this! During English, we have been reading ‘Running Wild’ - an excellent book which has really engaged us all! After analysing Will, his feelings and behaviour, we can’t wait to find out more about what happened to him on his holiday to Indonesia! Geography lessons contained our pre- launch  and we impressed Miss Spooner and Miss Warren with our prior knowledge! We labelled a world map ��️ and made sure we included South Africa, Italy, United Kingdom, Greece, Egypt, Ghana, France, Germany, Poland, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and all the other countries we have looked at previously! We certainly had multiple facts about these countries in our long term memory already. We are looking forward to our launch lesson next week to introduce North and South America! In Science, we classified and then sorted all different kinds of animals into scientific groups.  

Some fantastic learning this week from class 13. Congratulations to our first certificate winners of the year!
