Class 9
Spring 2026 - Newsletter, Home Learning Grid and Climate Grid
Week Ending 06/03/2026
Year 4 added an eco-theme to Science Week to work on the theme: Curiosity - What's your question? Working in groups, we designed, built, tested and evaluated how we could add recyclable materials to work as insulation for a building. We had great fun during the process and were surprised by some of the results!
Class 9 helped launch Climate Joy Day by taking part in an assembly and explaining what we do in our Green School Project. We explained what a carbon footprint is and the fact that the school has reduced emissions by 10%. We worked with Shine to learn The Climate Joy song and created a posted to show how Ghana has been affected by climate change. Our day had a science theme as we worked on a project to see how we could insulate a building using recyclable materials; the results were very interesting.
World Book Day
Class 9 had a brilliant World Book Day. We took part in various activities during the day and our highlight was reading with Class 1 (while enjoying a biscuit too). We took part in an interactive lesson on BBC Bitesize, discussed our favourite types of books and explored where we like to read.

On Friday morning we were able to share the climate work we are doing in school with some very important visitors. Councillor John Tudor and Richard Burgon MP joined our whole school assembly and then met different groups of children to learn more about what we believe is important at Beechwood. The children discussed our curriculum brilliantly, listened carefully and asked very thoughtful questions. We learned that Richard Burgon already does a lot of work promoting climate education and we hope he will tell people about what we do at Beechwood. John Tudor inspired us with his own story about how he began picking up litter locally to make a difference in his own area. After this visit, we have lots of ideas about what we will do next in school.

Year of Aspiration

Catherine Conyard visited our school to lead us on a journey through Ancient Greece. Catherine used to be a teacher and has been running historical workshops for over 10 years. We interviewed her to see how she got to this point in her career. We asked the following questions ...
What do you enjoy about your job?
"I love history and working with children. I am in a different school each day and on average, work in 150 schools a year. Every day is different and I never know what challenges I will face. I love working for myself as it gives me lots of opportunity to develop new skills."
Why did you decide to do this work?
"I started teaching around 23 years ago but had to stop when I had children. As my children got older, I started these workshops and have been running them for many years. I love my job."
How do you develop the knowledge/skills to complete the workshops?
"I do a lot of research and can create a new workshop in 2-3 weeks. I use books, tv and the internet to help research new topics - I love to learn! Some of the reconstructed artefacts I use can take a bit of time to find or build (not always by me) but they are essential so children can imagine what life was like in those times."
