Summer Term Newsletter

Monday 10th March

 

Science Week Assembly

 

     

 

This week is International Science Week and the theme is change and adapt. We began the week with an assembly with Mr Graham where we looked into the theme and linked it to our previous science learning. This week we will be taking part in scientific activities to celebrate the week.

 

There is also a competition running this week where we will be answering the question: Why is science important? Mr Graham and Miss Moss look forward to seeing everyone’s entries!

World Book Day

 

     

 

We enjoyed World Book Day today, dressing up in either pyjamas or as a book character, and did lots of reading through the day. As part of the event, Class 14 read with Class 5 which was really fun! We shared our books and listened to the younger children read.

Safer Internet Day Assembly

 

Safer Internet Day will be on Tuesday 11th February this year. We had an assembly with Mr Jackson to get ready for the day and think about how we can stay safe online.

Science - Light

 

Today in science, we looked at how light travels in straight lines. We found it interesting seeing the light travel through the holes in the card. Also, when we bent a tube, the light did not travel through it!

TSU Launch Lesson

 

Today we began our France and the French Revolution topic with our launch lesson.

 

We investigated 5 areas which we will continue to look at through the topic:

  • the French monarchy
  • the third estate
  • after the revolution
  • revolutions around the world
  • French Impressionist art


We completed a carousel of activities and wrote our findings in our research books.

 

      

 

   

 

We then thought of questions we would like to answer through the topic and compiled them into a list of 10.

Place2Be and Children’s Mental Health Week Assembly

 

 

Today, we had an assembly with Emma from Place2Be where she told us about this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week. The special week will be from 3rd - 9th February and Emma told us that there will be exciting activities!

 

We finished the session by listening to a story about a Koala which helped us to understand mental health.

This term in history, we will be learning all about the French Revolution. Attached is the new home learning grid with lots of exciting activities to do. We look forward to seeing what you create this term!

Anti-Bullying Week Assembly 

 

Mrs Giles led an assembly today to talk about Anti-Bullying Week. We recapped the definition of bullying and watched some videos about the week. We thought about how we could be kind to others by filling up their buckets and not taking from them.

PE Coach

 

Today we enjoyed our first session with the PE coach. We practised ball skills in lots of different games.

Climate Joy Day

 

For Climate Joy Day today, Year 6 learnt all about things in the Earth that trap carbon so we have a good amount in the atmosphere. They are called carbon sinks and include forests, the ocean and permafrost. We learnt all about them then continued our research and created a group outcome.

 

     

 

     

Tuesday 15th October

Harvest Assembly

 

Today we had an assembly with Rev Anne where she told us all about Harvest. We learnt about the importance of sharing food with those who need it and we created a healthy ‘soup’ using lots of different vegetables that spelled our harvest.

Black History Month Assembly

 

Today we had an assembly with Mrs Lanforth all about Black History Month. We looked at different people who are famous for making a difference, some we knew and some were new to us. Throughout October, we will be learning about some inspirational people for Black History Month and we will be showing you what we have learnt in an assembly later this month!

European Day of Languages

 

Today we celebrated the European Day of Languages. We began with an assembly with Mrs Powley who told us all about the day and showed us how to play a game where we had to find all of the languages. We did lots of activities looking at the different languages and some members of our class even brought cake in!

 

 

There were also certificates given out for amazing work throughout the European Day of Languages!

Home Learning

 

 

Well done to Erica-Rose and Emily for this fantastic home learning all about North and South America!

Wednesday 25th September

DT - Bridges

 

    

 

We were challenged to make a chair that someone in our class could sit on in DT today. It was really difficult to make a strong enough chair but we remembered some strengthening techniques from previous years. We will learn how to make strong joins in our next lessons so when we make bridges, they will be really strong!

Today, we continued practising our dodgeball skills in PE.

Thursday 19th September

Science

Today in science, we continued our classification of living things topic. We grouped living things, thinking about what we had learnt in previous years before learning about three new classification categories: fungi, protesta and monera. 

 

Tuesday 17th September

 

West Yorkshire Fire Visit

 

Today we had a visit from 3 firefighters who spoke to us about fire safety and how their jobs work. They then showed us their uniform and then we went outside to see the fire engine. We even got to spray water out of the hose!
