Year 3 had a great time visiting the Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility. We learnt all about what we can and can't recycle at home and what happens to the rubbish that we throw away. We learnt that instead of going to a landfill, the rubbish is taken to the facility and burnt to create energy which is then used to power homes. We enjoyed seeing the control room and made pledges about how we can be better at recyclin

The splash of red around our classroom to celebrate Red Nose Day got us off to a cheery start on Friday. Highlights include the following: practising our new verbs through a variety of team and partner games; making and drawing time on analogue clocks; learning about the function of a stem in science and a visit from Class 10, showing us a tub of frogspawn found in our school pond. We were all impressed to see how well Darina had been looking after her bulb, too -it is really growing now! It is lovely to hear so many others of you are being careful and successful gardeners with yours as well. Keep it up!

The children really enjoyed their new French unit, learning 5 verbs, using their listening and speaking skills. In maths, they continued to learn to tell and write the time for o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to through a variety of practical activities. In the afternoon, they started a new science topic about plants and labelled the parts and functions of a flower.
As part of Science week, we looked at the adaptations of different animals. We worked in pairs to match adaptation clues to different animals. We then chose our favourite animal and did our own research, putting our favourite facts into posters and fact files.

It was a wonderful World Book Day on Friday with fabulous outfits and pyjama wear! Class 8 held their own Beechwood Book Club and they were partnered with a Nursery child with whom they shared a story- everyone in Class 8 showed how caring and patient they were 🙂 In the afternoon they finished their science topic on light and shadows, making posters about how to keep safe in the sun.
Have a great weekend!

Well done to all those who kept going until Friday this week -what a busy time it has been!
In French, on Friday, we showcased our skills at speaking, listening, reading and writing about instruments. In maths, we enjoyed a variety of practical activities to recap our knowledge of time to the hour. Finally, in science we planned and carried out an investigation to test how shadows change.
I am very impressed with everyone telling me how well they are looking after their bulb, and it was lovely to see Emily's shoots beginning to show 🌼. Remember: your bulb may soon need to be replanted into a larger pot now it has grown a bit.

The children loved taking part in a virtual draw along with Neill Cameron and James Turner, drawing robot characters in the style of these artists. In French, we had a conversation about the instruments we play, and dropped in greetings exchanges that we had previously learnt. Then in the afternoon, the children got inspiration for their next creative writing task when they found an old suitcase in the classroom, and had to work out who it might belong to by unpacking its items. They deduced it was from a young girl, travelling without family, who loved gardening. This led them on to a bulb planting activity. The day ended with Golden Time. Have a great half term (and take care of your bulbs!) 🙂🌱
We have had a very busy last week of this half term. One of our favourite parts of the week was continuing with our art work. We enjoyed taking our own photographs using cameras and chose our favourite photo to use in art. We then used the computers to explore different digital painting techniques, recreating colours, shapes and patterns.
Here are some of our drawings that we did at home to celebrate Chinese New Year.

7th February
Friday highlights included: learning that the French have 3 different words for 'the': le, la, les. We successfully sorted the French words for different instruments according to whether they were masculine, feminine or plural. In science, we explored and observed how shadows can change size, shape and direction according to the object making them and the light source. Finally, we celebrated having the top attendance in the school this week with cookies and orange juice: congratulations. 🎉 Keep up the good work for the last week!
This week we completed our gymnastics routines in PE. We have enjoyed working together over the last few weeks to make a routine that included rolls, balances and jumps. We are looking forward to watching our routines together as a class.

Class 8 enjoyed our local walk around Seacroft with Matthew Bellwood. We learnt lots of interesting facts about different buildings and enjoyed listening to some stories about the past from local residents. We also enjoyed looking at some maps of Seacroft and learning about how Seacroft has changed over time.

Class 8 Blog:
We continued to learn another 5 instruments in French as well as recapping the first 5 we learnt last week. We are so good at spotting cognates🌟 Our half term science topic is all about light and shadows. In the first two weeks, we drew a mind map to show our prior knowledge and sorted statements about light into true/false/unsure. Then we grouped objects into hard / easy to see in the dark using a peephole and bravely experienced the absence of light by trying the dark tent. Today, we considered the question: Which objects are the most reflective? Our investigation led us to discover that the least shiny objects were the least reflective and the shiniest were the most reflective. We also considered, though, how this investigation wasn't a fair test. Maybe, you could carry out a test at home, making it even more fair💡Please send in any photos.

This week, we have had our launch lesson for our new topic - Our community, our responsibility. We enjoyed looking at different types of maps of Yorkshire, Leeds and Seacroft. We also used books and chromebooks to find facts about recycling and looking after our environment. We went on a walk around school to find facts about the United Kingdom and other countries around the world.

Our Friday learning included; learning 5 French words for musical instruments; gathering information from tally charts and pictograms and starting our science topic on lights and shadows. We shared our prior knowledge on this topic by drawing a mind map. Then we investigated the scientific question: "What do we need to see?". To answer this, we made predictions about which objects would be hard/less hard to see in the dark. Then we tested our predictions using a dark tent and a peephole box. 🔆💡🔦
The children have shown great resilience this week, coming to school in the snow and ice, and not complaining about having indoor playtimes/lunchtimes each day. We are very proud of them all! 🌟
Let's hope everyone can get out a bit more as the thaw begins ☃☀️🙂
