In TSU this week, we have been learning about different aspects of Indian culture. In groups, we chose one key aspect to focus on and research in greater depth. After carrying out this research, we wrote a script for either a podcast or video. The aspects we chose from were:

  • Religion
  • Art
  • Music
  • Architecture
  • Festivals
  • Clothing
  • Cuisine
  • Bollywood
  • Sport

The groups who recorded podcasts used an online voice recorder and downloaded the audio files so that they could be uploaded to this school website.

Day one

Our residential to London started very early at 6:30am (we were tired but we were excited.) The journey on the coach was long, exhausting and very loud.  About halfway there, we stopped at a service station. When we arrived in London the first place we went was the Imperial War Museum. Not long after we got there, we explored each floor and each floor had different artefacts and military vehicles(we saw Tanks and guns.) The gift shop was amazing because there were lots of things connected to our topic of world war two. After that,we travelled to the center of London. When we passed the London Eye ,we were shocked to see how ginormous it was! We felt like tiny ants compared to it. We rode the London Eye. It was scary at first but it was cool but Tyler forgot his camera and he was annoyed.

Day Two

On the second day, the first place we visited was the science museum which had a bunch of different areas like space, world war two.Tyler and Emily's favourite bit was the space area.we also got to go to the wonder lab and it was spectacular! Then we went to the British museum and Emily really enjoyed it.(There were too many museums to walk in.)Soon we all got hungry and we went to the Jungle Cave and then food was amazing(Tyler preferred  pizza express more.) We went to the National Art Museum gallery and all the paintings were created by famous artists around the world. We walked to Lion King and it was very long and some people fell asleep because they were so tired!

Day 3

On day three we went to the Natural History Museum and it was quite boring.when we went to Buckingham Palace it started to rain heavily and we got drench after we went home.

Our London Blog

Day 1

Our first day began with a long journey to London. When we first arrived, we went to the Imperial War Museum. We were all very excited about learning more about our topic, which was World War Two, so we rushed into the museum. After that, we started heading to the Weapon and Artillery ( fighter jets, guns and many more). Shortly after, we took a walk down to Westminster Abbey and also saw 10 Downing street ( where the Prime Minister lives). After that, we took a stroll to Pizza Express for an amazing dinner. Shortly after we walked down to the London eye (which had an amazing view at the very top). After that, we started to head back to the coach - then went back to our Hostel- . Xanders highlight of the day was “when we went on the London Eye because we went up so high and could even see Buckingham Palace”.

Alicia's highlight of the day was “ the London Eye because the view was amazing and I could see Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace”.

Day 2

To start off our day we went to the amazing Science Museum. In the Science Museum we went to the Wonder Lab. The Wonder Lab was fantastic- it even had slides-. After the Science Museum we headed out to the British Museum. Soon after, we went to the National Art Gallery which had lots of famous Art pieces. After a while, we headed to the Jungle Cave, which had lots of Monkeys. I had a burger and thought it was delicious. We had a really busy day, I fell straight asleep when we got back to the Hostel! Xander said his highlight of the day was”The Jungle Cave because it had monkeys , not real ones though” . Alicia’s highlight of the day was “the theater when we went to watch the Lion King because it is something I will always remember”.

Day 3

We started our last day off at the Natural History Museum. After a while we went to the gift shop. Shortly after, we headed to the coach to go to Buckingham Palace which was our next destination. As it was heavily raining we only stayed at Buckingham Palace for around 10 minutes. After that we headed back home but stopped at the services so we didn’t starve to death.

Our Trip To London - By Laceyleigh, Frankie & Ayo

The journey on the coach was more than 3 ½  hours long but thankfully we all got to see the amazing views on the way there. Although the journey was long, most of us stayed awake to be the first ones to see all of London's famous landmarks and beautiful sights. After we arrived, we went straight into the Imperial War Museum, which was actually quite fun. We all thought it was fun and interesting because we got to see guns, armor, navy ships and much more. Then, we ate our dinner in the museum and sadly had to leave to set off. Next we got off the coach 30 minutes after while we were all hungry for our food - Pizza Express - . We then walked across/past  downtown near Westminster Abbey and we even went to see Winston Churchill’s statue. Laceyleigh’s highlight of today was the London Eye eventhough she is scared of heights. We also went to the London Eye after all the exploring. It was actually quite scary but was fun.

We woke up and had our breakfast, which we all thought was scrumptious and amazing, served by our amazing teachers. After this, it was all just chaos and full of excitement         ( these things include the Science museum, The wonder Lab,The British Museum,The jungle cave, The natural art gallery, a hit Trafalgar Square and last but not least the Lion king theater). Ayo’s favorite part of the day was the amazing performance by the actors, who wore very detailed costumes.

On day 3, there wasn't that much to talk about as we only did a few things but it definitely was a moment to remember. Firstly, we went to the Natural History Museum where we saw many sculptures and learnt about different 3D objects. We then went to Buckingham Palace but we didn't have much time to view it. Frankie's favorite part of the day was probably Buckingham palace because I got to see the Union Jack. Sadly after we had to go back to Leeds as it was raining.

Day 1

On our London adventure,we went to the Imperial War Museum, looked around the building (and went to the gift shop).

Then, we ate our lunch in the lunchroom (when it was our turn). After we had our lunch we went to the magnificent Westminster Abbey. Then we went to the London eye in 5 groups, (we were like ant’s when we were off the London eye). Before the London eye,we had Pizza Express for our tea. Our favourite part of the Imperial War Museum was the gift shop, where we bought gifts for our families.

Day 2

We went to the science museum and there was another gift shop! In all the museums that we went to there were more gift shop’s. The wonder lab was inside the first museum at the start of day 2, then we went to the british museum . Even though it was a long tiring day, all of us had so much fun.The jungle cave was themed like a jungle inside and there were fake thunderstorms! The best part of the day was watching the lion king at the theatre.

Day 3

We went on the coach then went to the last museum then we went to Buckingham Palace, however the King was inside and it was raining. Then we went back home and for tea we had mcdonalds at the service station. When we got home, we had some food and Leo’s mum made him food he did not like the food that was made! We relaxed as we were very tired from the trip.

What we did while other classmates went to London by Jace and Cole

    Day one 29.3.23

On day one we went out in groups with Mrs Clarke to make bread. First, we washed our hands then weighed the ingredients ( which were flour, sugar, salt, water, Oil and yeast ). After that, Mrs Clarke explained the method of how we were going to make it. Once we had weighed the ingredients correctly, we put  the flour in, then on one side we put sugar and salt and the yeast on the other side because salt kills yeast. Then, we mixed it all with a wooden spoon and kept adding water overtime. Next, we needed it with our hands and sprinkled flour on the table and rolled the dough in the flour. We thought that it felt extremely weird and sticky. After that, we put it back in the bowl, then Mrs Clarke put it in the oven to prove. At the end of the day Mrs Clarke let us try some of hers. In Jaces and Coles that was the best part out of everything we had done that day. We were all allowed to take the one that we made home.

Day two 30.3.23

On day two, it was raining so we had inside play for both playtimes. In both play times we played chess with our friends and connect four ( Jace was the best at chess and connect four Cole was second at chess and connect four). After play, we went to drumming with our drumming teacher. It was very fun because normally there were lots of people but there were only a couple of people.

Day three 31.3.23

On day three it was the whole school assembly before easter. They were giving Easter eggs for people who were there all term ( Cole didn't get one but Jace did). Cole was disappointed because he didn't get one

What some of year 5 did when they went to London By Yedra

Day1

When some year 5 went to london the people that stayed behind made bread. We washed our hands then we weighed out the ingredients. First we added strong bread flour salt, sugar, dried yeast and a little bit of oil. After waiting hours, we finally got called to kneaded the dough until it was ready to prove. After an hour or so we got told that it was ready to go in the oven. The bread was cooked for 20 min until it was golden brown. Then Mrs Clarke came with the bread she had made so we could taste it with butter. My favorite part of the day was the cooking. It was so fun.

Day2

The second day we had an assembly but we had to sing a song called with a little help from my friends. After the song, some of us had easter eggs for good attendance. We also got certificates. After that, we drew  airplanes but I didn't like mine. We did some drawing and played some games. My favorite part of the day was playing chess and drawing.

On day 2 we did drumming,pe and an easter assembly. It was a whole school assembly  (we sang a song called with a little help from my friends). It was nice to be at school with a small group of people as we could chat and do nice things together.

As part of our WW2 topic we designed and created an alarm system that would have been used in the time of the war.  We could create either a silent alarm that alerted only specific people or an alarm that sounded as a warning.  We had to make the switches ourselves (either a peg, pressure or slide switch) and make the series circuit work.  All groups used their knowledge from our electricity science topic to make sure they had working alarms that fitted into their designs.

Year 5 had the opportunity to learn all about what life was like in Britain during WW2 on Wednesday 18th January when Matthew came in to teach us all about The Home Front.  We learned about the roles of the ARP wardens and Fire Guards, what rationing was and why it was essential at that time.  We started to look at propaganda and how the government used it to influence the way people thought and behaved.  We had a great time and we are now looking forward to our visit to Lotherton Hall where we will take on the role of an evacuee child.

🔴🟠🟡🔵 CHILDREN IN NEED 2022 🔴🟠🟡🔵

Certificate winners 👏 18.11.22

On Wednesday 16th November, Class 12 visited the Leeds Industrial Museum to experience what life was like for children in Leeds during Victorian times.  We each took on our own role, taking on the life of a child inside a Victorian classroom and then in the woollen mill.

The Victorians believed in the “3 Rs”  Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.  These 3 lessons were what the Victorians thought were the fundamentals for learning.

This is what we found out about Victorian lessons:

READING:

The process of learning to read began with the alphabet. Children then read short simple words often with only three letters. Often the sentences were written in isolation and made little sense as a whole text. Each standard had its own class reader or children read in unison around the class.

The reading lesson often contained spellings at the end, which the child had to learn. Correct spelling was thought to be very important

children were frequently tested on their spelling and a lot of time was spent learning them.

ARITHMETIC:

Children were expected to learn their tables by heart and chanted them regularly in unison and individually. Slate boards were used for addition, subtraction and multiplication and were often marked out in squares for this purpose.

Children were taught simple addition and subtraction in Stage 1 and multiplication and division in Stage 2.

Mental Arithmetic was also considered important and a great deal of time was spent on this especially with the boys who often spent their afternoons on this.

WRITING:

The first stage in learning to write was to practise the formation of “pot hooks” – the basic line and curve used in writing. Young children wrote in sand trays and older children used slate boards and slate pencils, later progressing on to using pen and ink. Copy books were used for writing and involved copying repetitive lines of text in copper plate style (named after the copper sheets used in the printing process).
