Reception Class 1

24th June

On Wednesday we went on our first school trip to Lotherton Hall. We had a fantastic time and the children really enjoyed the workshop on habitats and looking at all the animals and doing a scavenger hunt in the woods. The children were amazing and we are so proud of them for how well they engaged and behaved.

This week we have also been continuing our Talk for Writing work based on the story “The Very Lonely Firefly” by Eric Carle. We have made fireflies using a range of resources on a large and small scale and the children have been fantastic at retelling the story using actions.

We welcomed two more  amazing Secret Readers this week at storytime! So far we have had Remi's mum, Remi's dad, Deuel's mum, Teddy's mum and Oliver's dad in to read us a story at the end of the day. We have more planned for next week!

10th June

We have launched the Animals part of our Plants and Animals topic this week with a brilliant workshop from Captivating Creatures. We got to meet and handle a range of creatures including a snake, tortoise, gecko, bearded dragon, stick insect, guinea pig, chinchilla, giant millipede, African land snail and more!  The leader of the workshop commented on the fantastic behaviour of the children.
Also, a big thank you to our two amazing Secret Readers, Remi’s mum and Deuel’s mum, who have come in to read a story to the children this week!

27th May

We have really enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this week! We have done lots of work about the past and present. We enjoyed reading the book What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday where the ladybird visits London and saves the Queen’s jewels!

We enjoyed visiting the Nursery and playing with the Nursery children as part of our Jubilee celebrations and working on past and present. The children who used to attend Beechwood Nursery enjoyed sharing how it has changed since they were there.

Thank you for all your amazing support in sending in food for our Jubilee picnic and also our fundraising this week. The Jubilee cakes were especially fantastic

13th May

This week we have had a worm theme. We have found out so many facts about worms and why they are good for the garden. We have written fact files about worms.  We have been looking for worms in our outside area and closely investigating them. We have had a storytelling workshop from Tiny Tales and Tunes based on Superworm which was so much fun!

29th April

This week we have continued preparing our garden for planting. We have also learned about the lifecycle of a bean and have looked at information books and videos about this. We have been doing some lovely observational artwork of spring flowers using paint and pastels

22nd April

We have started our new topic, 'Plants and Animals' this week. We have been busy weeding our garden, getting ready to plant seeds. We also planted some strawberry plants in containers.

25th March

As part of our Journeys topic, we have had great fun reading the book The Naughty Bus this week and learning a song about it. We have done some small world play linked to the book, created our own large bus and used the iPad to take photos to make our own class book about the Naughty Bus. We did some absolutely amazing writing about it!
We also had a wonderful visit from the Yorkshire Owl Experience. We found out lots of information about owls and talked about the journeys owls might go on!

11th February

This week we have continued our work on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We had Northern Ballet come in to do a workshop with us based on the story of Goldilocks. We told the story and explored the different characters through music and movement. We also had fun making porridge. We looked at a recipe and listed what we would need to make porridge, including toppings! We really enjoyed making the porridge and adding toppings such as banana, raisins, jam and honey. It was delicious! Outdoors we have been doing lots of comparing size and measuring linked to the story of Goldilocks.

4th February

We have been learning about The Three Little Pigs and have been building houses for them using a range of materials. We tested which ones were the strongest. We have also been learning all about Lunar New Year.

21st January

This week we have been learning about The Gingerbread Man. We have created story maps, acted out the story, created collage gingerbread men and made salt dough gingerbread men. Next week we will use our story maps to do some writing about The Gingerbread Man.

14th January

This week in Class 1 we have done the launch of our Traditional Tales topic. We have decided which stories we would like to learn more about. We have been busy setting up our new roleplay area. We have a 'Once Upon a Time' storytelling area in our class.

10th December

We have had a busy week in Class One. We have been practising our Nativity play and doing lots of Christmas crafts. Outside we have been making large scale Christmas trees with recycled SCRAP materials. In maths, we have been learning all about 2d and 3d shapes.

3rd December

We have had a very busy week developing our new roleplay area: a Christmas workshop! We have been busy writing lists and letters to Santa, addressing envelopes, decorating the tree and doing lots of problem solving in wrapping presents.

26th November

This week we have been learning all about the Nativity story and we have really enjoyed acting out the story. We have started to turn our gazebo outside into a stable. We have also been very busy learning our Christmas songs for our Nativity.

19th November

We have had a very exciting Friday this week as it has been Children in Need day! We have dressed up either in spotty clothes or our pyjamas or non-school uniform. We have also had a little bun sale to raise money for a very special cause! Thank you for all your donations and support!

This week as part of our ‘celebrations’ topic we have been learning all about Birthdays and the different ways we can celebrate them. We have been very excited as this week it was our class puppet Fred’s birthday and we planned and organised a birthday party for him! He turned 6!

12th November

We have been learning all about Diwali as part of our Celebrations topic this week. We have made diva lamps, Henna and Rangoli patterns. Diwali is a festival of light and fireworks are an important part of this. We linked this to our recent experience with fireworks.

After our great workshop on Cinderella, we have also continued to explore the story as part of our topic, and we have had lots of discussions about invitations and what we use them for. We have had a go at writing our own invitations.

We have also done work about Remembrance day. We talked about the poppy as a way of remembering and made poppy biscuits.
