Year 1

We celebrated Earth Day by learning about the importance of looking after our oceans and the impact humans can have on marine life. We also explored the life and work of David Attenborough, discovering more about his incredible documentaries, including his latest film about the oceans. Working collaboratively, we created a fantastic large-scale ocean model, filling it with coral, jellyfish, fish, turtles, seahorses and seaweed. Everyone contributed creatively, and it was wonderful to see the teamwork on display. A special highlight was Sam and Oscar’s brilliant LEGO model of David Attenborough, which added a unique and thoughtful touch to our project.

We created a collaborative “tree of actions” filled with ideas about how we can help protect and care for our planet. Each leaf represented something we can do in our daily lives to make a positive difference, from reducing waste to looking after nature and using resources more responsibly. We based our work on the inspiring example of Wangari Maathai, who showed how planting trees and taking action can create lasting environmental change. The finished tree was a powerful reminder that small actions, when joined together, can have a big impact on the world around us.

On Climate Day Year 1 enjoyed doing our scavenger hunt and thinking about what is good for our environment at school. We also collected Autumn leaves and used them for art work. We made climate posters and pledges, thinking about what changes we could make to help the planet.
