We have been working hard in Maths with our addition strategies, using a range of manipulatives to find the sum. In English we have been story writing as we have recalled the African folk tale, Awongelama. We have also finished our Art this week with some beautiful African patterns that we have printed using our very own hand made printing tiles! We had a busy Friday, investigating which fabrics would be good for a toddler's dungarees as well as having an opportunity to hear a children's community nurse talk about her job and answer our really interesting questions. Golden Time was fun, too!

Our road safety lesson took place this week so we now know the 4 most important steps before crossing a road: think, stop, look, listen...
Rev Anne came back to visit our class on Friday, this time talking about her role in the community. We asked her some thoughtful questions and listened respectfully to her answers. In science, we enjoyed answering the question: which ball bounces the highest and linked this with whether the material is fit for purpose.

We've had a very creative week in Class 5, making 3d mixed media maps of South Africa. We worked together in small groups to represent the different land features and labelled the key places explored last week. We also enjoyed a visit from Matthew Bellwood where we took part in a story telling workshop based on an old African folk tale. The children enjoyed taking on the roles of the characters and have created their story maps to recall the main events of the story, Awongelama. We also enjoyed a visit from Rev Anne who taught us about the similarities between different faiths. We explored the concept "If we all work together, something beautiful happens," by creating a homemade loom to weave ribbons! We used the drama technique 'conscience alley' to explore empathising with others and giving advice to friends who are facing a dilemma. We further explored how we felt in our Check-in and Check-out sessions this week, And, of course, we enjoyed Golden Time.

On Wednesday we became Geographers for the afternoon, using maps of South Africa to locate a range of locations and discuss whether they were human or physical features. In PSHE, we worked hard to work out how to recognise people's feelings, linking this to our own experience. We also had very insightful discussions about whether these feelings sit comfortably and uncomfortably with us. As part of our science topic on choosing materials, we used a Michael Rosen poem as inspiration to consider different combinations of materials and their objects and weigh up if they were fit for purpose -more on this next week! At the end of the day, we shared the yummy cakes brought in my some of our class.

It was lovely to see Class 5 return to school ready for learning after their half-term break. Our Climate Joy day was really enjoyable as we thought about our carbon footprint and sang our Earth Day song with confidence. We turned into detectives to complete the sponsored scavenger hunt, considering aspects of the school environment that contribute positively to the climate situation. Thank you for all the generous sponsorship received. We ended the day by celebrating the arrival of hedgehogs in our school grounds using the shelters built in the school garden. We re-used natural materials to create our own hedgehog pictures in the outdoor area! If you complete any of the home learning tasks supporting our climate curriculum, we would love to see your work in school. A highlight of the week also has to be winning the Punctuality Pedro award - and we demolished the biscuits with impressive speed! What a fab way to start the new half term -keep this up Class 5

The last week of the first half term brought our Black History Month assembly where we really enjoyed sharing our fantastic knowledge all about Nelson Mandela! We have been able to use this information to write our own non-fiction reports about his life too, trying hard to use a range of conjunctions. We were very fortunate to welcome a class parent in to share their family celebrations of Diwali with us too. We also reflected on our visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park by creating a block graph showing the amount of animals we saw. In our final drumming lesson, we showcased all we had learnt about rhythm on our Bamboo Tamboos in an accomplished performance. And of course, we finished off the week with a little extra Golden Time as a reward for being a wonderful and hard-working class. We hope you had a lovely half term!

A lot of the children enjoyed touching a snake, hissing cockroaches and a giant African land snail. The polar bears kept us entertained in various ways too! The children's wonderful experience has been reflected beautifully in their writing as they have used a range of adjectives to describe the animals they saw. In PSHE, the children showcased their listening and speaking skills, sharing openly about their achievements as well as things they are not yet successful at. It showed how reflective and respectful we can be as a class😀Finally the children organised food into different groups so we can remember to eat the right amount
of different types of food to stay healthy. What a fabulous week! 🦁🦒🐯🐒🦏🌍

The children amazed me with their fantastic recall of knowledge and facts after completing a timeline of his. In science, we learnt what animals need to survive and decided which items a human baby needs or wants, justifying our answers. As part of our RE we played a game of tig to help us consider how good choices make a game fun, safe and fair and what happens when rules are broken. We are all looking forward to our school trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park Wednesday, and in the meantime, hope you are able to get out and enjoy the autumn sunshine at home🍂

It was great to see how confident everyone was using an atlas. We all enjoyed our drumming session, this week focusing on pulse. In PSHE, we considered the qualities that make a good friend and in RE we discussed our most important class rules. In Maths we have continued to grow our place value understanding using part-part-whole diagrams. In Geography we researched UK landmarks, finding out which country these well-known places were in. It was lovely to hear some of the children's previous experience of the landmarks we explored!
European Day of Languages was a definite highlight of this week, getting off to a great start with many of us arriving dressed in national colours, and some with incredible cakes (winners will be announced next week in the assembly)🍰🎂 . This week, we have been learning about word classes in English, exploring how nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are used to add interest to text. In Maths, we have continued using place value knowledge, solving problems using 2-digit numbers. Shine helped us create animal dances as we went back on the South Africa safari. In science, we closely observed life cycles of animals in the different animal groups we are learning about, ready to write about the life cycle of a butterfly next week. Our first drumming lesson of the year proved to be very popular and we tried hard to follow the rhythm on Bamboo Tamboos (photos next week!). Once again, we rounded the week off with a wonderful Golden Time.
