Class 12
6th March
Class 12 have had another busy and exciting week! We successfully completed Bikeability, despite a little rescheduling, and the children did a fantastic job showing their cycling skills and road safety awareness. We also celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite characters, enjoying a special story-time with Mrs Baldwin, and sharing books with Year 1. It was wonderful to see everyone’s enthusiasm for reading! 📚🚲
Well done to our certificate winners this week too!

Class 12 have had a fantastic start back after the half-term break! The children returned with brilliant attitudes and lots of enthusiasm for learning. This week, Bikeability began and everyone showed great focus and responsibility on their bikes – it continues next week. In Science, we have launched our exciting new topic: Earth and Space. 🚀

Mrs Haylings and Miss Taylor took children from both Y5/6 to compete in a Foot Tech football 3 v 3 tournament at Bishop Young Academy on Tuesday 9th February. The children played a number of competitive games against schools from across East and North Leeds. Everyone enjoyed the morning and there were some incredible skills shown including perseverance and resilience. At the end of the tournament a select few children were shown to be standout players (MVPs!) and Year 6's very own Summer H was chosen! We are very proud of all the children who took part.

A group of Year 5 children attended a youth summit at Leeds Civic Hall on Friday. They represented school brilliantly during question and answer sessions with our local councillors and different workshops to learn more about democracy. Everyone enjoyed meeting the Leeds Mayor in the council chambers at the end of the event.

Our visit to the United Hebrew Congregation Leeds synagogue was a fantastic learning experience. The pupils showed excellent behaviour throughout and represented the school brilliantly. They listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and demonstrated real interest and respect for the synagogue and its traditions. The guides commented on how well prepared the children were and were impressed by their knowledge of Jewish festivals and worship. Pupils particularly enjoyed learning about the features of the synagogue and how celebrations such as Simchat Torah and other festivals are marked. It was a focused, engaging visit that brought our RE learning to life in a meaningful and memorable way.
Well done to our certificate winners this week.
On Friday morning we were able to share the climate work we are doing in school with some very important visitors. Councillor John Tudor and Richard Burgon MP joined our whole school assembly and then met different groups of children to learn more about what we believe is important at Beechwood. The children discussed our curriculum brilliantly, listened carefully and asked very thoughtful questions. We learned that Richard Burgon already does a lot of work promoting climate education and we hope he will tell people about what we do at Beechwood. John Tudor inspired us with his own story about how he began picking up litter locally to make a difference in his own area. After this visit, we have lots of ideas about what we will do next in school.

This week, we have been busy learning across the curriculum: in English, we continued our work on Goodnight Mr Tom, focusing on descriptive writing and exploring characters’ thoughts and feelings; in maths, we developed our understanding of fractions by, comparing and adding them; in science, we built and tested simple electric circuits using bulbs, and batteries adding cells to make the bulbs brighter; and in R.E., we learned about the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah, exploring how it is celebrated and why it is an important and joyful time for Jewish communities.

On Friday we celebrated the European Day of Languages with lots of exciting activities. Pupils took part in quizzes and bingo games, as well as doing their own research to learn more about different countries and cultures. The highlight of the day was when Year 6 organised a special French café in the hall, where they served food and drinks. It was a fun and educational day that helped everyone appreciate the importance of learning languages.

Year 5 had a fantastic trip to see Northern Ballet’s production of Merlin at the Grand Theatre. The class were amazed by the performance and the superb dancing as the story was told. Everyone loved the dragon puppet as well as the special effects. Children demonstrated excellent behaviour and listened and watched well.
Year 5 also had an introduction to the workshops that they will be doing each Friday with Dagma, who explained all about the different productions they will look at and the reasons why dance is an important part of our P.E. Curriculum.

This week, Class 12 began their history topic for the autumn term which is the Victorians. The children took part in a pre-launch session where they considered their previous historical learning in KS1 and LKS2 and the knowledge they already had that could be built on. They thought about the chronology that they have already learnt and historical facts from each era. Next, was an exciting launch session. To begin with, the children completed an ‘Impossible, Maybe, Possible’ Task where they had to sort statements about the Victorians and decide if they could be true or not. They had to use their wider knowledge of history and what they had previously learned about the Victorians in Year Two to help them. Next, they created a mind map of what they already knew and could remember about the Victorian era. After that, the children completed a carousel of different stations to help them devise the key questions to guide our learning throughout this topic. Ideas were recorded on post-it notes then Class 12 used these ideas to formulate open ended questions to research and answer. We used the following headings to generate questions:
Arts and Leisure
Victorian Leeds
Queen Victoria and the British Empire
Life in Victorian Britain: Equality and Change
Victorian Childhood
The children will answer the questions they have devised throughout the autumn term. Mrs Sturman was very impressed with their prior knowledge and the way in which they were able to talk about the chronology and facts connected to their previous historical learning. Well done Class 12!
