A group of year 4 children were asked to attend an event at the Civic Hall Leeds. It was attended by the Lord and Lady Mayor of Leeds, Hillary Ben MP and trade organisations in support of Fair Trade.
Children from many schools in Leeds were represented to learn more about the Fair Trade organisation.
As a school we have attended this event in the past but this year instead of just taking part in some of the activities and workshops our school was asked to prepare and run one. The children in Year 4 look at the Fair Trade model as part of the study unit on Ghana. The children who attended the event will have the opportunity to deliver their workshop again to their class this term.
Our students were given a certificate for their had work by the Lord Mayor of Leeds. They were excellent ambassadors for our school.
Well done Year 4.
The children in Class 9 have begun a study of the art work of the Ghanaian artist Edward Saidi.
This week Class 9 have started our new TSU topic Ghana. In our launch lesson we began to research different things including Ghanaian art, Ghana's landscape and daily life in Ghana. We then shared what we had found out and thought about questions we would like to research further.
This week we designed our Ancient Greek theatre masks. We chose different characters from the myths we have read and thought about what materials we would need to make them. We also tested out 2 different methods for making our masks and then decided which method we liked better.
This week Class 9 had their Black History Month assembly. In Year 4 we focused on Barack Obama. We learnt facts about his life from his childhood to when he became President. We also sang a song called 'We Shall Overcome' which is a key anthem of the Civil Rights Movement.
On Friday we handed out our attendance stickers and certificates. Well done to all those children who have had 100% attendance this half term.
This week Class 9 started to prepare for a skipping competition which we will take part in next year. One of the judges for the competition came into school to teach us the different skills we need to take part. She taught us some individual skills, some paired skills and some group skills. We also started to think about a skipping dance that we will be doing.
On Friday afternoon, we visited Leeds City Museum to learn more about Ancient Greece. We used clues to search for different artefacts in the museum and presented our findings to the class. We also worked in groups to look at other artefacts more closely.
This week class 9 have been making their final Ancient Greek pots. At the start of the week all the children started with a block of clay and used a method to make it into their chosen shape. We then waited for the pots to dry and finally got to start painting them.
This week we really enjoyed our No Pens Day. On Wednesday we had two exciting visitors. We re-told stories and tried out some different musical instruments. For Maths we made some different 3D shapes from nets. We were able to identify the shapes and talk about their properties. We also tested out using the clay as a practise for our Ancient Greek pottery. We practised 2 different methods for making the correct shape and some of us even decorated our practise pots with patterns.
In Art we have been looking at Ancient Greek pottery. First we looked at some different Greek pots and talked about things we could see on them, like patterns, shapes and pictures. Then we practised making some of the patterns using different pencils. We chose our favourite patterns and re-created them using paints. We used orange as the base colour and black to make our patterns stand out.
This week Class 9 have enjoyed two special visitors. The first was Matthew Bellwood who spent the day teaching us about the Ancient Greeks. We learnt some different Greek Myths and got to retell one in the school Amphitheatre. We also learnt about Democracy and had our own debate and vote.
Our second visit was from Northern Ballet. We enjoyed learning different ballet moves and dancing along to the music by the pianist. Some of the moves really tested our balance and strength.
This week Class 9 have began our TSU Topic on Ancient Greece. We used different sources of information to find out about The Ancient Olympics, Daily life for Ancient Greeks, Ancient Greek pottery, Theatres, Gods and Goddesses and Democracy. Class 9 especially enjoyed looking at the Greek pottery and theatre masks. We also thought of some interesting questions that we could investigate all about Ancient Greece.
