London Residential - Day 1
Year 6 have had a fantastic first day in London!
After setting off from Beechwood, we made the journey to London and had lots of fun playing games, discussing the things we would do in London and eating sweets! When we arrived, we went straight to Russell Square Gardens to have our packed lunches and stretch our legs after the journey. From there, we walked over to the British Museum which is in a magnificent building.
In the museum, we saw lots of artefacts that related to the history topics we have studied at Beechwood, including Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, Roman swords and the Sutton Hoo burial. We were amazed at how things from thousands of years ago were preserved so well and it really brought the history topics to life.
From there, we headed to the River Thames for a river cruise. We travelled down the river and saw many famous sights while a tour guide explained the history of what was around us. We saw the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London amongst many more fascinating landmarks.
We then had a closer look at the Houses of Parliament and the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) as we walked across the river and were amazed at the size of this giant clock tower. It struck four o’clock as we were walking by so we had the chance to hear the famous bells ring. We passed Westminster Abbey and had a look at the statues of famous historical figures in Parliament Square before heading back across the river.
Next, we went for a delicious meal at Pizza Express. There were many Italian dishes on offer and we enjoyed sitting at the tables chatting with friends.
After a busy day of sight-seeing, we were taken to the hostel where we unpacked and got ready for bed in our rooms.
We are all very excited for tomorrow’s activities!
