Welcome to Year 1
25th April
Class 3 had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Day. We explored our outdoor area looking at flowers and signs of spring. We also went on a minibeast hunt and designed minibeast hotels. We planned sensory gardens and also discussed planting a wild flower meadow, and painted ideas of what we would want it to look like.

4th April
In Class 3 we designed, made and evaluated healthy fruit pancakes as our Design and Technology focus for Food of Many Nations. We practiced skills such as grating, chopping and peeling before creating our pancake.

14th March
In Class 3 we have done the history aspect of our Food of Many Nations topic and have learnt about the history of food in the Stone Age, Roman times, Medieval times, Tudor times and Victorian times. We did some amazing interactive workshops where we travelled back in time and did drama, learnt songs and poems and did food tasting.

7th March
We have done our final art outcome linked to our topic using all the skills we have been taught. We did fruit related art - collage based on the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, still life pastels based on the work of Paul Cezanne and still life painting based on the work of Michelangelo Carvaggio. We also enjoyed celebrating World Book Day.

28th February
We have started our new unit in Science which is all about materials. We found out that some materials are natural and some are manufactured. We looked closely at, and sorted, objects that were wood, metal and plastic. In art we continued with our skills lessons, learning how to use pastels and how to create a collage.

14th February
This week we have done some art work linked to our Food of Many Nations TSU. The children looked at fruits from around the world and used art pencils to sketch the fruits. They used vocabulary such as sketch, shade, shadow, texture, shape and pattern. The children also enjoyed using the beebots and remote control cars in their computing lesson. In science we used all of the knowledge we have learned during our Animals unit and sorted animals into the five vertebrate groups.

7th February
This week we have been learning about human and physical features of geography. We have also been retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and have done some wonderful writing. On Friday we 'dressed to express' and talked about our emotions, linking them to the film Inside Out. We were very excited as our class won an attendance reward and we had juice and cookies!

31st January
This week we have continued our work on the continents. We had the seven continents set up in different areas of our classroom. Each area had a map of the continent, artefacts from that continent and pictures of landmarks, animals and foods from that continent. The children each had a passport to use to travel to each continent to find out more about it and to locate it on our world map. Once they had done this they could collect a stamp to add to their passport. We have also been learning about Chinese New Year.

24th January
This week we have been collecting food packaging from around the world to add to our world map. People have brought things in from places such as Jamaica, Sri Lanca, China, Spain, Italy, Brazil and Chile. I wonder how many more places we will add next week! Qing also brought a coin from China to stick onto the map and Leon, Lola and Ibn all brought in flags they had made at home to add to our working wall. We have been working hard to learn the seven continents this week. In maths our focus has been on our teen numbers and we have been making teen numbers with a range of manipulatives, ordering them on a number line and finding one more and one less than a given number. We have loved PE this week where we have been putting together a Pirate dance. The children have been very creative and were very confident performers.

17th January
We have launched our new topic 'Food of Many Nations' and are excited to learn more about the world we live in and what foods people eat. We looked at atlases and flag books and also enjoyed looking at different types of food, drawing food and making food from playdough. We have been learning about Jack and the Beanstalk in English. We watched a fantastic puppet show and did drama and puppet making linked to the story.

20th December
We have had a busy last week of term in Class 3. We finished off our work on our senses in science by tasting different things and describing them using words such as sweet and sour. We have also been busy doing lots of Christmas and end of term crafts such as making cards, calendars, reindeer food and decorations. We had our class party which was so much fun.

This week we have enjoyed talking about and writing about our trip to Eureka. In Science we have been naming parts of our body and learning that humans are mammals. We have started the art for our Who Am I? Topic. We have been looking at a range of portraits by different artists in different styles and have been doing skills such as exploring sketching pencils and different sorts of paint brushes, sketching facial features and colour mixing, ready for drawing and painting our own portraits next week.

Class 3 have had a very exciting week. We celebrated Climate Joy Day on Wednesday. On Thursday we had our trip to Eureka which was amazing. The children's behaviour was impeccable. We found out about our senses, how our body works and had a Gross Lab workshop. We also explored the mini town.
25th October 2024
We have worked hard to complete our moving pictures based on our favourite toys in Design and Technology. We planned, made and then evaluated our finished pictures and discussed what we liked about our moving pictures and what we would change next time.

In Class 3 we have continued our work on toys as part of our topic, Who Am I? . We have found out about toys in Victorian times and looked at how they are different to the toys we play with today. We were historians, looking for clues to find out whether toys were old and new and explaining why. We learned to play the sort of playground games children played in Victorian times and we set up a 'Time Travellers' Toyshop' role-play area. We have also been learning all about Mae Jemison for our Black History Month focus.
4th October 2024
We have had a very busy week in Class 3. In English we have been reading The Train Ride by June Crebbin and we acted out the story. In Design and Technology we have been learning the skills we need to make moving pictures. We have been making pictures with pivots and sliders. In Science we have been on an Autumn walk, looking for signs of Autumn but also signs of which animals share our space. We found fox holes, spider webs, birds nests and we found leaves, pine cones and apples that had been nibbled by creatures. We spotted a butterfly, woodlice , spiders, beetles, birds and also looked in the hedgehog home that has been built in the community garden.

27th September 2024
We enjoyed the European Day of Languages on Thursday and have found out how to say hello in six different languages! We have continued our topic work on toys and have created a time line to show toys that we have played with at different stages in our life. We have been looking at the questionnaires our parents and grandparents returned telling us all about the toys they used to play with. O

20th September 2024
In Class 3 this week we have continued our Who Am I? topic by talking about toys we play with now and toys we played with in the past, as babies and toddlers. We brought in a favourite toy from home and showed it to the class and talked about what it is, what is made of and why we chose it. We then wrote about our toy in English. We also worked together to make a questionnaire to send home to our parents to tell us about what toys our parents and grandparents used to play with.

13th September
In Class 3 we have had a very busy week with lots of outdoor learning. In English we were learning about labels, signs and captions and we labelled everything we could find in the community garden. In Science we have been talking about the seasons and we went on a walk to answer the question 'Are all leaves the same?'. We collected leaves to look at, draw and create leaf prints with. We have also started our topic Who Am I?. We read the book Once There Were Giants and talked about how we have changed since we were babies.
