Spring Climate Knowledge Mat

Year 1 Spring Newsletter and Home Learning Grid 2025

Welcome to Year 1

Year 1 Newsletter

4th April

Year 1 travelled through history, exploring how food has changed from the Stone Age to today! The adventure began with Harna, a Stone Age woman, who showed the children how early humans gathered nuts, berries, and even hunted woolly mammoths. They then met Claudia from Roman Britain, tasting olives and Roman-style flatbread, before stepping into medieval times, where they learned about peasant pottages and noble banquets. Tudor times introduced them to potatoes, tomatoes, and the fascinating discovery of chocolate! In the Victorian era, the children created a bustling market soundscape and even watched fish and chips being made. A highlight was a special interview with 95-year-old Mr Blackburn, who shared his memories of rationing and growing vegetables during World War II. The journey ended with a look at food today and in the future—could we one day be eating insects or growing food on Mars? Next term, the children will dive deeper into history by exploring homes from different time periods and taking part in another exciting interactive workshop. A big thank you to everyone who helped bring history to life—well done, Year 1!

This week, Year 1 enjoyed an amazing workshop about 'Jack and the Beanstalk'! They watched a brilliant puppet show and participated in drama activities to learn about the key events in the story. Afterwards, they returned to class and created their own puppets to explore the characters further. The workshop was a hit, and the children were thrilled to show off their puppets at home.
