Domestic Violence and Abuse
Domestic Violence
At Beechwood Primary School, we recognise the profound impact that domestic violence can have on children, adults and families. It is our duty to ensure that our students feel safe and supported should they witness or experience the effects of domestic violence. Domestic violence can be:
· Partner abuse
· Family abuse
· Child to parent abuse (when the child is aged 16 or above)
· Physical abuse
· Emotional abuse
· Coercive and controlling behaviour
Experiencing domestic abuse can have a serious, long lasting emotional and psychological impact on children. In some cases, a child may blame themselves for the abuse or may have had to leave the family home as a result (KCSIE 2025).
Our commitment is to offer the best possible support to our pupils, fostering an environment where they can thrive emotionally and academically. We believe that this proactive approach benefits not only the children but the entire school community. As part of our PSHE curriculum, we teach about relationships and focus on what makes a good and not good relationship so that children are aware of how they should expect themselves and others to be treated.
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, you can contact any of our safeguarding team (Kathryn Roberts, Kirsty Giles, Rebecca Magill and Ileana Ticala) who can support you in getting the correct help.
Additional support for victims, as well as those who are worried about friends and loved ones, can be found at the National Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge.
They can be called free of charge and in confidence, 24 hours a day on 0808 2000 247.
