Year 1

Year 1 had a wonderful time celebrating Earth Day with a fantastic afternoon focused on improving the school grounds and supporting biodiversity. In the morning, they explored the outdoor area, looking at flowers and signs of spring, and went on a mini-beast hunt. As part of their Science learning, the children investigated the question, "Are all plants the same?" and also observed insects, birds, and mini-beasts, connecting with the Earth Day theme of caring for living things.

In the afternoon, they participated in the “Brilliant Biodiversity” workshop. They began with a discussion on how to make the school space more exciting and full of life, learning about biodiversity. The children became Nature Explorers, using magnifying glasses to identify plants and wildlife. They also planned sensory gardens, designed mini-beast hotels, and discussed planting a wildflower meadow. They then rotated through creative ‘Idea Stations,’ where they painted their visions for a wildflower garden, designed wellbeing gardens, and built bug hotels, all contributing to ideas for enhancing the school’s outdoor spaces.

The day was filled with enthusiasm, creativity, and big ideas for making Beechwood’s grounds a haven for wildlife and wellbeing. The children can’t wait to start planting seeds, building bug hotels, and watching their new garden spaces grow!

Climate Curriculum – Summer Term – Home Learning

In Class 3 we talked about how food choices can impact the environment and how climate affects what can be grown. We talked about eating locally grown and seasonal produce when possible to help the planet. We also talked about wasting food and water. We made posters to show our learning.

For International Women's Day and Climate Joy Day, the children in Class 4 learned about the famous female chef Nadiya Hussain. They explored how food choices impact the environment and created collages and posters promoting local, sustainable eating, linking this to their science work on seasons. As part of the activity, they designed a large plate divided into seasonal sections, showcasing their incredible artwork, which is now proudly displayed in the classroom. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and gained valuable insights.

We celebrated Climate Joy Day on Wednesday by discussing the effects of climate change. We learned a song, went on a walk and a  leaf hunt and made mobiles and hats showing how we can tackle climate change.
